From Chaos to Calm: The God Factor in Mental Health

Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.”

But where does true peacemaking begin? How can we genuinely become peacemakers in a world filled with conflict and confusion? Is peace something we can simply discover within ourselves?

Sigmund Freud once suggested that peace is merely a mental attitude—that if we discard our phobias and shed our neuroses, then “bingo!” we’ll find the peace we’ve been searching for. While I have great respect for psychiatry and acknowledge the real help it has provided to many, it falls short as a substitute for the deep, abiding peace that only God can give.

If any approach to healing leaves God out, it inevitably leads to a cycle of brokenness—even among the healers themselves. Without peace with God, there can be no lasting peace within ourselves or with others. The Bible tells us plainly, “He is our peace” (Ephesians 2:14).

True peacemaking doesn’t start with theory—it starts with transformation. It begins when our hearts are reconciled to God. Only then can we reflect His peace to a hurting world.
