Rediscovering Compassion in a Calloused World

We live in an age where sensitivity to the needs of others often feels lost beneath layers of indifference and self-interest. A veneer of sophistication and emotional hardness has taken hold of many hearts, dulling our response to the pain and poverty around us.

Abraham Lincoln once said, "I am sorry for the man who can't feel the whip when it is laid on the other man's back." His words ring true even today, as much of the world turns a blind eye to human suffering.

This widespread numbness is, in part, the result of spiritual emptiness. Many have never experienced the transformative power of God’s love—a love that softens hearts and awakens compassion. They’ve never had a true rebirth, a redemptive encounter with the Gospel that changes not only their eternity, but also how they see the people around them.

Some speak of the "social gospel" as if it's something separate from the redemptive Gospel of Christ. But in truth, there is only one Gospel—and it begins with redemption. Only when we are made right with God can we truly see others through the lens of divine love.

God's love flows like a sunbeam: first downward, then outward. Unless our hearts are touched and transformed by the Holy Spirit, we cannot reflect the warmth of God’s compassion to a hurting world.

To truly love others, our hearts must first be kindled by the love of Christ. Only then can we feel the pain on another’s back—and be moved to respond.
