Beyond the Rainbow: The True Source of Happiness
King George V once wrote in the flyleaf of a friend’s Bible, “The secret of happiness is not to do what you like to do, but to learn to like what you have to do.”
Many people today treat happiness like a treasure to be chased—a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. They run tirelessly from one pursuit to another, hoping that the next achievement, relationship, or possession will finally make them happy. Yet, just like the elusive rainbow’s end, true happiness often seems just out of reach.
The truth is, happiness isn’t found by relentless searching or self-centered striving. It’s not something we stumble upon; it’s something we grow into when our hearts are rightly aligned with God. The Bible puts it simply:
“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” —Matthew 6:33
The “things” Jesus referred to—food, clothes, shelter, and security—are often the very things we chase in the name of happiness. But He reminds us not to make them our chief goal. When we make God’s Kingdom our focus, joy naturally follows.
Happiness, then, is not the reward for pursuit—it’s the result of surrender. It blooms quietly when we stop striving and start seeking Him.
So, if you’ve been searching beyond the rainbow for joy, pause for a moment. Look upward, and inward. True happiness isn’t somewhere out there—it’s found in walking daily with the One who made you, sustains you, and fills your heart with peace that nothing else can give.
